biography
Tom Hubbard is a bassist, arranger and composer living and working in New York City.
He began his studies on electric bass at age fourteen with bassist and electronic music composer Richard Paske. At age seventeen he took up the double bass, studying with Art Gold of the Minnesota Orchestra. After Art's untimely death in 1977, Tom continued his studies with Art's section mate George Stahl until 1983. He received a BA in music performance and visual arts from Augsburg College in Minneapolis in 1981.
Concurrent with his classical studies with Stahl, he began jazz studies with renowned jazz bassist Richard Davis at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During this time he also participated in master classes conducted by many esteemed classical and jazz bassists including Gary Karr, Bertram Turetzky, Paul Ellison, Ray Brown and Dave Holland. At Holland's urging he participated in the jazz program at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in 1985 and again in 1989.
He has performed with many of the finest players in jazz including guitarists Ron Affif, Dave Stryker, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd, saxophonists Dewey Redman, Rick Margitza, Al Cohn, Harold Land, Dave Pietro and Andy Middleton, trumpeters John McNeil, Roy Hargrove, Jim Rotundi, Scott Wendholt and Randy Brecker, drummers Dannie Richmond, Kenny Washington, Wynard Harper and Beaver Harris and pianists Kenny Barron, Larry Willis and Cyrus Chestnut among others. Tom has accompanied many singers including Laurel Massé, Chris Connor, Liza Minnelli, Sheila Jordan, Martha Reeves, Joe Williams and Freddy Cole, He performed on and wrote arrangements for seven of Freddy's CD's and contributed arrangements for Grover Washington, Jr.ʼs 1994 Sony Music release, All My Tomorrows and for bassist George Mraz's Milestone CD's Jazz (1996) and Basslines (1997).
